Utilities Practice Rebrand

Belize Water Services

A concept rebrand of BWS — taking inspiration from Belize's national water authority and rebuilding it as a modern, credibility-first government utility site.

BWS is one of Belize's most essential public institutions, yet their digital presence didn't reflect that. This practice project studied the existing site and existing brand, then rebuilt the homepage from scratch — cleaner structure, stronger hierarchy, and a palette that communicates reliability without feeling cold. Built on Squarespace 7.1 Fluid Engine as a portfolio exercise.

The Brief

A national utility that deserved a better presence.

BWS serves over 294,000 residents across Belize — but their website didn't reflect the scale or credibility of that mission. The self-set challenge: study what they had, identify the gaps, and build a homepage that immediately communicates public trust.

The Solution

Structure, hierarchy, and deliberate colour.

A Deep Teal and Burnt Orange palette with Fraunces headings and Inter body copy. The layout follows a clear information hierarchy — stat-heavy hero, quick-access services strip, operations overview, and a news section. Every section earns its place.

The Outcome

A portfolio piece that proves range.

Building a government utility site requires different instincts than a restaurant or gym — restraint, information density, and institutional credibility over personality. This project demonstrates that range and stands as a reference for pitching similar Belize clients.

What went into every section.

Every design decision served one goal: make a visitor immediately understand they are on a trusted, competent, government-grade platform. Here is what went into each section of the page.

Stat-dense hero — 294K consumers, 65K+ connections, 11 offices
A teal hero with "Water that moves Belize forward." in Fraunces. Three floating stat cards anchor the right side, delivering scale and credibility above the fold. Two CTAs — Pay Your Bill and Apply for Service — handle the two most common user journeys immediately.
Quick-access services strip — four icon links
A light-background strip below the hero surfaces the four actions residents need most: Pay Bill Online, Report an Issue, Apply for Service, and Contact Us. No friction, no navigation hunting — the most used functions are one click from the top.
By the numbers — full-width dark stat bar
A secondary deep teal stat band reinforces the scale of BWS operations: 294K, 65M, 240M, 11. Count-up animation on scroll. Compact, informative, and builds institutional weight without requiring a separate about section.
Operations overview — Water Treatment, Wastewater, Service Areas
Three cards on a soft light background, each with a teal image, category label, descriptive copy, and a Learn More arrow link. The light section creates contrast after two dark sections and opens up the page visually.
Customer services grid — Apply, Pay, Rates & Metering
Three icon-led service tiles with a clean white background and orange accent on the CTA links. Structured to make the resident's next step completely obvious — regardless of why they landed on the site.
News & updates — editorial three-column layout
A news section with a featured large article left and two smaller items right, each with a category label, date, and headline. Shows BWS as an active, communicating institution — not a static brochure site.
